Should I Choose A Solid or Hollow ARB?
Anti Roll Bars are usually built differently by many companies, of which changes the characteristics of how they perform. Sway bars can be built up from a solid material or a hollow material - of which means there is nothing in the middle of the bar. Generally the difference between the types of bars is not big enough to be of concern. However there can be differences. For example, there is multiple calculations you can perform to work out an exact amount of stiffness factor your ARB can produce. Whether this is in nm or kg, doesn't really matter. The simple explanation for the calculations is usually that the thickness of the ARB will be different for hollow to solid. Solid bars are calculated on the size of the bar and the material of the bar itself. As where Hollow bars are will be calculated on the same but to also include the inner diameter thickness of the bar too. Therefore, this usually means solid bars are stiffer overall. EG, A 22mm solid bar, may produce a similar stiffness factor of a 26mm hollow bar. This however depends on the inner wall thickness of the Hollow bar and the materials used from different manufacturers.
How Can I Calculate My ARB Stiffness Factor?
Torsional stiffness is related to the diameter to the forth power. Hollow bars would require you to then subtract the inner diameter cubed.
Solid 25mm bar
25 x 25 x 25 x 25 = 390,625 SF
Hollow 25mm with a 12mm inner diameter bar
25 x 25 x 25 x 25 - 12 x 12 x 12 x 12 = 369,889 SF
As you can see above, the Hollow ARB is slightly less rigid in comparison to a Solid ARB.
